FAQ
NZ Aviation News: The Truth about Sunglasses
Randolph Sunglasses have become the sunglass of choice for many pilots.
Charton International in Christchurch distributes Randolph Sunglasses throughout New Zealand, Australia and the South Pacific and Director Kelly Fisher says there are a few common questions asked worldwide.
Q. What lenses are the best for me?
A. Neutral grey lenses are the most common lenses worn by pilots, including the RNZAF and the US Air force. This is because there is no colour distortion at all through grey lenses; they are 100% colour correct. However without adding any green tint the UV rating is only about 98%.
AGX or grey/green lenses are very popular for those who are light sensitive or who prefer a darker lens. Tan lenses are a high contrast option worn by Glider pilots or those working, driving or flying in hazy conditions. These are an excellent option for winter driving.
Q.What about polarized glasses?
A. Polarized lenses are not aviation approved because if two polarized surfaces are put together they will block out all light.
Polarization of the cockpit or instrument panel can cause dangerous visual black patches for a pilot who is wearing polarized lenses. Polarized sunglasses are excellent for fishing by diminishing the reflected light from the water surface.
Q. Do you have any wrap around styles?
A. The Randolph Raptor and the new Randolph Jag are the closest styles we have to a Wrap. All Randolph lenses are glass rather than plastic and glass cannot be bent without distortion. Randolph Sunglasses are technical sunglasses built to Military Specification and the optical clarity of glass lenses is a priority.
Glass lenses are also more scratch resistant and will last a lifetime with proper care.
Q. Can I get my prescription put into my sunglasses?
A. Randolph can sell you a set of frames to get your optometrist to install your prescription lenses into. Randolph has a life time warranty on frame solder joints and has a reputation for strong, engineered frames so it is worth the effort. Randolph Frames are a good price compared to other high fashion frames.
Q. What is Randolph's warranty on frames and/or lenses?
A. All Randolph products carry a lifetime warranty for solder joint failures and a one-year warranty on other parts returned under normal conditions. There is no warranty on lenses.
Q. How long will it take my product to be shipped after I order it?
A. Our goal is to ship orders within 1 or 2-business days. Large or special orders may take longer, however if this is the case we will endeavour to discuss this with you immediately.
Q. Who pays for the shipping of my product(s)?
A. Shipping is free within New Zealand. International orders are paid for by the customer with costs varying dependant on the destination. This will be calculated for you at the online checkout.
Q. Are Randolph sunglasses UV protected?
A. Yes, all Randolph sunglasses offer UV protection.
UVA - 96.4% to 100% blocking depending on lens choice
UVB 100% blocking for all lenses
Q. Can I order replacement parts?
A. Yes, All sunglass frame system components can be ordered separately. Call Customer Service in Christchurch on (03) 348-7232 for pricing and availability.
Frame Sizing Information
If you have an existing frame that fits comfortably
Measure the frame by placing it on a ruler and note the width at the widest point where the temples attach. The following are the measurements of the Aviator for a guide.
| Aviator | Eye Size | Frame Size | Fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 52mm | 135mm/5.3 inches | Small/Medium | |
| 55mm | 140mm/5.5 inches | Medium/Large | |
| 58mm | 150mm/5.9 inches | Large/Extra Large |
If you don't have a frame to go by
Holding a ruler over your eyes easily does this measurement. Using a mirror, or have someone helping, line up the end of the ruler with one temple and then measure to the opposite temple. The reading will give you a good idea of which size frame is right for you.
General rule of thumb:
125mm / small
135mm / medium
145 / large
155 / extra-large
A top pair of Randolph Sunglasses is a practical and stylish gift idea that any aviation enthusiast or adventurer will enjoy all year round.
